Vik chose the formal route through the fanciful corridors of the palace to escort Claire back to her rooms, rather than the shortcut that ran through the back garden. The groupâs conversation had stretched long into the night, making it quite late. As they descended to the first floor, Claire could no longer see the bright lights of the town that sheâd noticed from Dionâs window. Although they had been chatting quite freely earlier, for some reason their conversation now died out. The only sound echoing in the halls was the measured tapping of their footsteps against the marble floor. In the midst of the odd hush on that autumn night, soft lantern light beautifully illuminated the corridor here and there.
Vik walked just ahead of Claire. She would have preferred to walk abreast of him, but she wasnât sure how he would take that. He and I used to walk like that many times before, she thought.
In her first life, Vik had shown attraction to her right from the start. It had puzzled her yet, at the same time, thrilled her. Claire had been drawn to Vik even while fully aware of the differences in their respective stations. I will be satisfied even if we can just be friends, as my goal is to have peace between both Noston and Paffuto. I mustnât ask for any more indulgences beyond that.
Vik suddenly turned back to look at her with gentle, kind eyes and remarked, âYouâre awfully quiet tonight.â
She realized sheâd naturally know the color of those eyes anywhere. âAs are you, Your Highness,â Claire pointed out.
âBy the way,â Vik asked, âhow come you only refer to me by my title? You never call the knights âsirâ anymore. Arenât we friends?â
âIn a sense, yes...but I am only a student from abroad that youâve been kind enough to treat so nicely.â
From the day she had Mesmerized Dion, Claire had indeed considered Vik to be a friend. Ever since then, she had dispensed with all formalities for the knights, but for some reason, she could not bring herself to call Vik by his name.
âYou see,â she began, but before she could go further, Vik pulled her into the shadow of a pillar. She gasped internally as the familiar scent of his cologne assailed her. But something was wrong.
âYour Highness?â she asked.
Vik did not answer her, only held a finger to his lips and peered off into the darkness a short distance away. Silently, Claire followed his gaze and found Prince Oswald and the tall man sheâd seen conversing with him before.
âMy lord brother and Marquis Rioux,â he whispered.
âSo thatâs the marquis who is plotting with Prince Oswald and the Meads?â Claire whispered back. âI saw them talking once before in a secluded area.â
âWell, based on what Dion says, thatâs no wonder.â
His whispering voice was the same as it ever was, but Claire realized that Vik was standing extremely close to her. His eyes seemed to darken for a moment, and she swore it was not just her imagination.
